Grading 9th-1st Kyu

Sheffield Shotokan grading consists of 3 elements which are called Kata, Kumite, Kihon.

 

Each student has to meet different critiera to enable them to pass to the next level of grading.

Kata consists of kicks, punches, sweeps, strikes, blocks, and throws.

Kumite however commonly known as sparring where two opponents practise their techniques against each other. 

Kihon consists of successive restatements of the basic techniques.

9th Kyu

The Kihon Kata should be performed without mistakes and using tempo, continuation and transmission of power. Kumite should be accurate in offence and demonstrate effective defence and counter-attack.

KIHON (BASICS)

1. Gedanbarai (groin block) x 3 Forward Steps

2. Ageuke (head block) x 3 Backward Steps

3. Sotouke (outside block) x 3 Forward Steps / Turn

4. Oizuki (front punch) x 3 Forward Steps / Turn

8th Kyu

This grading is essentially basic in content, but students must demonstrate an upgrading of quality in stance, speed and power. Heian Shodan should be performed without mistakes and using tempo, continuation and transmission of power. Kumite should be accurate in offence and demonstrate effective defence and counter-attack.
